Cats lose most of their lactase enzyme production after weaning, making them prone to digestive upset from dairy. Hard aged cheeses like cheddar contain very little lactose due to fermentation, so a pea-sized piece occasionally is tolerable — but cheese offers nothing cats nutritionally need.
